Jason Cormier, December 8, 2017

When we think about our friends, relatives, and colleagues, the concept of values is straightforward. Is someone honest? Are they there for you? Will they make things right when—not if—they make a mistake?

For companies and brands, this core aspect of business is not always clear. It needs to be.

Give Your Creativity Room to Think

James Thorpe, October 27, 2017

As a marketing agency, people expect us to come up with creative ideas. But creativity is a mysterious and elusive companion, and as deadlines loom we seldom have the luxury to wait for inspiration to strike. That’s why we developed a process to help best harness our creative muse, and allow for a little magic without getting too hocus-pocus. Read More

Room 214 on 214

James Thorpe and Erika Stutzman, October 11, 2017

We thought we’d mix it up on the blog this week. To celebrate the joy of patterns emerging from randomness, the editorial team took a suggested prompt, had a conversation, and tried to glean insights — marketing or otherwise. We all like podcasts, and we like our company, so our co-founder James Clark had the idea that as Room 214, we listen to podcasts’ 214th episodes to see what we thought. We’ve got artists using science to explain life, and scientists using art to explain life, and some knitting. Read More

We know how important happiness is, and spend ample amounts of time and treasure in its pursuit. But if you’re relegating happiness to weekends and vacations, you’re missing an enormous opportunity — not to mention wasting a pretty sizable chunk of your life.

A new book encourages us to approach our workplaces with love, to practice mindfulness and use inspired tools to build a culture of happiness within — not outside — the 9-to-5. Read More

Giving Back: Three Best Practices

Erika Stutzman, May 9, 2017

One of our core values, “Acting out of Love Instead of Fear,” includes a mission of giving back to our community. We’ve built a system in our agency that encourages a culture of giving back, and enables team members to spend time on causes they care about.

We volunteer, and serve on boards and committees of local nonprofits. As individuals, our causes range from easing homelessness to protecting the environment. As an agency, one of our favorite events we do together is the annual March for Babies, a fundraising event for the March of Dimes. Read More

Room 214 Culture: Finding Time to Live Our Values

Ben Castelli, March 1, 2017

One of our three core values is “Acting out of Love Instead of Fear.” And part of what goes into this value is giving back – freely giving our time and energy to help others, and work on causes that are important to us. Another core value is “Leading with Humility,” and we know that we are leading with humility when we are teachable and learning to develop expertise.

But how the hell do you create an environment that enables people to make time to give back and develop expertise, while producing high-quality work for our clients? The bad news is that it ain’t easy, the good news is that it is possible. Here’s how we do it. Read More

Passion And Purpose: Working With Fine Art

Erika Stutzman, December 21, 2016

Fine art excites the senses and inspires creativity.

Upon picking up a fine art publication this month, we noticed a particularly inviting and familiar sight. Featured on the cover of Art Cover Magazine was “Freedom” — a Will Day piece we get to enjoy every day. The Boulder artist’s work is exhibited throughout the Room 214 building. The magazine cover’s real-life abstract painting graces our kitchen-slash-gameroom, and numerous other pieces by Day are installed all over our headquarters.

“That is the ultimate goal for me, to share my story with the world,” Day says. “Being in an office building, in a private collection, in galleries, all of it, it’s a blessing for me.”  Read More
