How to Create a Culture of Happiness At Work

Erika Stutzman, June 23, 2017

We know how important happiness is, and spend ample amounts of time and treasure in its pursuit. But if you’re relegating happiness to weekends and vacations, you’re missing an enormous opportunity — not to mention wasting a pretty sizable chunk of your life.

A new book encourages us to approach our workplaces with love, to practice mindfulness and use inspired tools to build a culture of happiness within — not outside — the 9-to-5. Read More

Giving Back: Three Best Practices

Erika Stutzman, May 9, 2017

One of our core values, “Acting out of Love Instead of Fear,” includes a mission of giving back to our community. We’ve built a system in our agency that encourages a culture of giving back, and enables team members to spend time on causes they care about.

We volunteer, and serve on boards and committees of local nonprofits. As individuals, our causes range from easing homelessness to protecting the environment. As an agency, one of our favorite events we do together is the annual March for Babies, a fundraising event for the March of Dimes. Read More

Room 214 Culture: Finding Time to Live Our Values

Ben Castelli, March 1, 2017

One of our three core values is “Acting out of Love Instead of Fear.” And part of what goes into this value is giving back – freely giving our time and energy to help others, and work on causes that are important to us. Another core value is “Leading with Humility,” and we know that we are leading with humility when we are teachable and learning to develop expertise.

But how the hell do you create an environment that enables people to make time to give back and develop expertise, while producing high-quality work for our clients? The bad news is that it ain’t easy, the good news is that it is possible. Here’s how we do it. Read More

Passion And Purpose: Working With Fine Art

Erika Stutzman, December 21, 2016

Fine art excites the senses and inspires creativity.

Upon picking up a fine art publication this month, we noticed a particularly inviting and familiar sight. Featured on the cover of Art Cover Magazine was “Freedom” — a Will Day piece we get to enjoy every day. The Boulder artist’s work is exhibited throughout the Room 214 building. The magazine cover’s real-life abstract painting graces our kitchen-slash-gameroom, and numerous other pieces by Day are installed all over our headquarters.

“That is the ultimate goal for me, to share my story with the world,” Day says. “Being in an office building, in a private collection, in galleries, all of it, it’s a blessing for me.”  Read More

Sharing the Holiday Spirit by Giving Back

Cassie Clusman, December 16, 2016

The idea of “giving back” comes into sharper focus during the holidays.

Even though giving back is something that benefits everyone, and affects our everyday lives, it’s not always the first thing on everyone’s mind. So how do we motivate a busy team to actively participate in contributing to the social good? Here’s my theory: Make it a game, let it be flexible, do it together, and create incentives. Read More

Being A Better Leader: 3 Keys to Maximize Your Credibility

Jason Cormier, October 25, 2016

Do you think of credibility in terms of your resume and experience? What degrees you hold, where you’ve worked, job titles that support your level of expertise or point of view? Your “track record” on paper may be an important element of your credibility, but as a trailing indicator, it will only take you so far.

Why? Because credibility, by definition, is about how you are perceived as trustworthy or believable – and whenever you come across the word “trust,” you should immediately be thinking of the word “relationship.” This is an important insight to understanding credibility is never a place where you arrive. Rather, it’s a direction you relentlessly navigate. Your job history and title won’t actually build relationships, but your practice of presence and empathy will.

Love Wins

James Thorpe, July 11, 2016

There were a lot of heavy hearts this morning in our mostly white office in our mostly white city, as we mourn the loss of Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, and the five police officers who lost their lives to the senseless and horrific shooting in Dallas. But we’re not just mourning for these seven men, but for our country as we bear witness to another painful inflection point in our nation’s history.
